RHEINHESSEN:

ONE OF GERMANY’S MOST IMPORTANT WINE-GROWING REGION

Rheinhessen is not only Germany’s largest wine-growing region and home to Germany’s oldest vineyard, which was first mentioned in a document in 742. Rheinhessen is still a particularly dynamic wine-growing region today. A self-confident, young generation of winegrowers between Bingen, Mainz and Worms produces modern wines that are recognised far beyond Germany’s borders.

Rheinhessen is more multifaceted than almost any other wine region and produces a wide range of exciting grape varieties and which brings along an infinite number of flavours. Hans Baer presents this fascinating diversity of Rheinhessen viticulture with an exquisite portfolio of authentic wines and a trendy look.

Rheinhessen is located in the heart of Germany and is bordered by the Rhine to the north and east. This gently undulating wine-growing region benefits from a mild, almost Mediterranean climate. The sheltered location, surrounded by low mountain ranges such as the Taunus and the Odenwald, ensures little rainfall and many hours of sunshine – ideal conditions for viticulture.

The region’s soils range from calcareous loess and clay marl to sandstone and shell limestone. This geological diversity shapes the character of the wines and gives them a special finesse – from fresh, mineral Rieslings to powerful Pinot wines.

Between the rolling hills of Rheinhessen, you can also discover small, white round buildings with conical roofs – the so-called trulli. These charming, historic buildings were once used by winegrowers as a shelter while working in the vineyards. Their construction is reminiscent of the trulli in Apulia, but they are an unmistakable symbol of Rhine-Hessian wine culture.
